Innovations vs traditions. Vepp vs ISPmanager Lite
The ultimate comparison of two services.
What is ISPmanager Lite and Vepp
ISPmanager and Vepp are control panels for website and web server management. They are developed by one company ISPsystem. Both services help create a website on hosting, assign a domain, and configure mail. A good control panel has many other features, but in this article we will tell you only about these main functions.
ISPmanager is a panel-pioneer. It is more than 15 years old and supports tens of tools and technologies. Thousands of websites are already running on this panel, and you can easily find tutorials on the Internet.
Vepp is an evolution of ISPmanager. This control panel has been developed taking into account the experience and requests from ISPmanager users (one server, one website, one domain) that’s why it is more simple and easy-to-use. There are not so many guides but you don’t need them in fact — most operations are intuitive.
Vepp is created as a replacement for ISPmanager that’s why they have many common features, however, there are differences as well. Let’s talk about them.
One demo is worth a thousand words
Let’s go from simple to complicated tasks: first, we’ll talk about design and simple operations, then — about webserver management and technical requirements.
The main difference between the panels is their design. Look at Vepp and ISPmanager and you will see how ideas about good and bad design have changed over the last 15 years.

Approach to user tasks
Without a doubt, the design is essential, however the functionality is more important. The main difference between these two products is the approach to user tasks. ISPmanager was designed as a control panel for web server management and shared hosting provisioning. Vepp was developed as a website management tool. And this approach changes much.
ISPmanager Lite. All functions are focused on a server and you need to get information about a website in different sections and complicated tables, as you can see on the screenshot below. You won’t find the word «website», «WWW domains» are used instead of it.
Vepp. The main focus is on a website. If you have at least one project it will be displayed on the main page. When you open Vepp you can see all the information about your website: access details, its IP address, quick access to domains, databases, backup copies, SSL and so on. It is intuitive and easy-to-use.
Install a website
To see the difference, let’s compare how the control panels solve the basic operation — the installation of WordPress.
ISPmanager Lite. First of all, you need to create a domain, install PHP, and enable it for the domain. Next, you need to select a CMS, configure the database settings and password, and wait until the installation is completed. It seems simple, however, if you don’t have an instruction you will hardly do it on the first try.
If you know where to find the settings, the configuration will take three minutes. If you don’t, you first should read the detailed guide and in about one hour and a half you will have your job done.
Vepp. The operations are much simpler here. On the dashboard, you select that you want to create a website from «Template», find a corresponding theme, and specify the address of the future website. That’s all! The control panel will make technical settings itself.
If you don’t hang on selecting a template you can complete the operation in Vepp in 30 seconds.
Connect an SSL certificate
Another widely performed operation is the connection of an SSL certificate that encrypts information transmitted between a user browser and a website. Browsers consider websites without SSL insecure and recommend users to close the webpage. You can get a basic free SSL certificate without a control panel, but it is more convenient to use it.
In ISPmanager Lite. You first need to install the module Let’s Encrypt, then go to WWW domains, open the website, select a free certificate in the form, and set its parameters.
In Vepp. This control panel will do everything itself if you have specified a real domain that leads to the server managed by Vepp, rather than a technical one. Or you can connect it manually. This operation won’t take much time, you can do so on the website card with three mouse clicks.
How Vepp connects a free SSL certificate when the website is already installed
To use your own mail is good and reputable. In both panels, you can configure mail and work with emails via the web client RoundCube. Just like other tasks, it’s simpler to configure mail in Vepp. But it doesn’t provide spam and virus protection tools.
In ISPmanager. First, create a mail domain, then a mailbox, and connect mailboxes with mail clients. Every step in ISPmanager is usually performed in different sections making the process more complicated and difficult. But you can set up the automatic integration with Thunderbird, Outlook, and Outlook Express, as well as spam protection via Greylisting and SpamAssassin.
Mail configuration in ISPmanager
In Vepp. Magically, the mail domain creation step is omitted and you can create a mailbox with a few mouse clicks. You even don’t need instructions. But in Vepp it’s not possible to connect Thunderbird and Outlook automatically, you can do so only manually. From the start, RoundCube will be enough for you. It will be already configured and Vepp will log in you automatically.
Mail configuration in Vepp
***After you have created the mailbox in both panels you need to add the MX-record. If you have specified NS-records on the registrar side when creating the website, it will be enough. If not, you need to specify them (see the instructions for more information).
Now it’s time to describe more complex tasks that are more flexible in ISPmanager.
In ISPmanager Lite. Backups can be made manually or automatically on a schedule. The control panel creates a .tgz archive that a user can later download to a local disk or upload to an FTP-server, or to Dropbox, Amazon, Yandex.Disk. Automatic backups will create a full backup copy of a website once a week, in other days only new or modified files will be backed up. The control panel keeps only 14 copies and deletes others.
Backups in ISPmanager
In Vepp. Currently, you can create only one copy manually. The control panel creates a tar archive on the same server where the website is hosted. A user can download it if needed. Now, it’s not possible to make differential copies and upload files to a cloud automatically.
Backups in Vepp
Both panels configure the server by default and only ISPmanager allows for its flexible configuration. However, very few users who run a large project might need it. Anyway, this is an advantageous feature of ISPmanager.
In ISPmanager Lite. Supports Apache and Nginx, PHP-FPM, PHP for Apache, Awstats, Webalizer, Logrotate. You can specify a web server mode, select what web servers to use, modify the configuration file template.
PHP settings in ISPmanager
In Vepp. Supports Apache and Nginx, PHP as CGI. Currently, a user cannot specify a web server mode, select what web servers to use, and edit the configuration file template.

ISPmanager wins again.
In ISPmanager. The control panel provides the built-in features for firewall, anti-spam, and antivirus tools, white and blacklists. The antiviruses ImunifyAV (ex. Revisium) and Virusdie search for viruses and malware code, inform the user and cure.
In Vepp. When creating a website the panel automatically closes ports and configures the firewall. There are no virus and spam protection tools but in September we will add Imunify360.
Integration and modules
Modules are additional services that can be used in the website control panel, for example, if you need a DDoS-protection, an antivirus or another tool for your website. Vepp doesn’t’ have modules yet. The following modules are available in ISPmanager:
- ImunifyAV (ex. Revisium) — an antivirus scans website files on a schedule and deletes the malware automatically.
- Virusdie — an antivirus that finds viruses, trojans, spambots in PHP, JS, and HTML files and cures them.
- DDoS-GUARD — protects domains from DDoS-attacks.
- Softaculous — this module allows installing CMS, blogs, forums, and other applications for the website.
- Site.pro — a cloud site builder for end-users and hosting providers who want to sell it with their services.
- Cloudflare — a free CDN that boosts and protects websites.

The main differences between Vepp and ISPmanager
If you are an inexperienced user or you only need to create a website on WordPress or configure domain and mail — use Vepp. With this panel, you won’t need to pay to freelancers.
If you are an advanced admin or you need flexible configuration of the webserver with an old-school design — choose ISPmanager. You will save time on fine-tuning through the SSH.
